The Diversity Guy

Danielle Saari

Pine Ridge High School News Paper

With just one look around the campus, it is easy to see the different personalities, cultures and colors that make up Pine Ridge.  “Diversity is everything that makes us different,” said newly hired administrator Luis Ramos. “We are all different.”

Ramos started working on campus March 3, to start bringing people together at school.  He is technically placed in the ESOL department, but he is here for all students.

He wants to involve himself with sports players to start bringing people together and teach them not to have biases against people of other races, cultures or clicks.  “People have misconceptions of a group, but mingling takes away bias,” said Ramos. “Sports glue people together.”

Since he started his work with the panthers, he started a vision to work with groups and organizations such as the Ambassadors (mentoring program), FFA, and sports groups.

One of Ramos’s favorite movies is Remember the Titans.  He met with the coaches from the real team the movie was based on, and brought them to his school in Pennsylvania, Kutztown University.  There, Coaches Herman Boone and Bill Yoast spoke and tried to bring people to understand a common goal.

On April 29, he will work with athletics director Dan Comau on an athletic fundraiser.  Ramos will be donating his autographed photograph of the real life Titans.  However, if his idea is approved, he will try to have it auctioned so athletics can gain more money.

Using his experiences from meeting the Titans, he will go to social studies classrooms and show the movie and talk to the classes.  Chenoweth has already started a unit to go with the presentation.

While Ramos attended college, he lived with mostly white students.  He thought of himself as a bridge between the whites and Latinos.  He was also the Vice President of the Latino Student Organization Association and the first American President to the International Students Organization.  Using this idea, he hopes to train students at Pine Ridge to be leaders.

After graduating from Kutztown University in 1995, Ramos moved to Puerto Rico for a short stay.  He later moved to Florida where he feels his home is because of his family here.  With the eight years he stayed in Florida, he became a Community Recruiter at DBCC.

To try to end bias by using respect, tolerance and diversity, Ramos will try to bring former Pine Ridge graduates Ray Nazario and Andrew Peloquin to talk to the school body about how they have been trained to be leaders and how to learn respect for others.

Through the remainder of the year, Ramos will listen to students’ ideas and continue to bring their thoughts together.  Next year, he will start springing the ideas into action.

“The Pine Ridge Vision Statement ‘Panthers will excel through diversity, seize technology and create the future’, stated Ramos, “is what it is all about.”

Programa de Jóvenes Líderes Hispanos

2375 Pennsylvania Avenue NW

Washington, DC  20037

                                                                        Sinceramente,
